Ads Coming to ChatGPT Free and Go Users in the United States, Says OpenAI

March 21 – OpenAI will begin displaying advertisements to users of the free and Go versions of ChatGPT in the United States within the coming weeks, according to a company spokesperson in a statement to Reuters.

The development was first reported by The Information.

As part of its advertising push, OpenAI has recently integrated Criteo into its pilot program for ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers in the U.S. Criteo provides tools that help advertisers purchase ads and improve targeting effectiveness.

According to The Information, Criteo has been encouraging advertisers to commit between $50,000 and $100,000 in ad spending. OpenAI has also advised advertisers that using multiple versions of ad text and visuals can increase ad visibility and improve performance.

The move reflects OpenAI’s efforts to explore advertising as a new revenue stream, as usage of ChatGPT continues to grow rapidly. The company is also looking to diversify its income sources while managing rising computing infrastructure costs and increasing competition in the generative AI space.
