GSMA and G6 Secure 18 Manufacturers for $40 Smartphone Rollout
LAGOS / ADDIS ABABA, The GSMA Handset Affordability Coalition has moved from technical theory to commercial execution. In a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this week, the coalition identified six "Frontier Markets" to pilot a standardized $40 4G smartphone.
Pilot Nations:
- Nigeria
- Ethiopia
- Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
- Rwanda
- Tanzania
- Uganda
The Economic Conflict: The initiative faces a significant headwind: component inflation. A global surge in memory chip prices has made the $40 price point nearly impossible for individual manufacturers. To counter this, the GSMA is using the G6’s collective demand, representing over 300 million subscribers, to negotiate bulk rates with 18 confirmed OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers).
The coalition is now pressuring African governments to match this private-sector effort by eliminating import duties on devices priced under $100.
